A label on the back states that this drawing was made in May 1886, early in the artist's sojourn in Australia when he still worked in watercolour; this date is supported by Arthur Morrison, a friend of the artist (letters of 15 July 1928 and 29 January 1929). The drawing master is said to be Henry Parkes.
