A drawing for carvings in wood, though in fact the war prevented Moore from doing any sculpture until the ‘Madonna and Child’ projects of 1943 (see N05600–N05603); it was not until 1951–4 that he returned to the ideas of this and other sketches in the sculptures of ‘Internal and External Forms’ (repr. Read, II, 1955, Nos.23–6).
