This sculpture combines a small figure made by the artist with readymade objects – a table and a chess-board. Positioned on top of the table, the dwarf stands at roughly average adult height. The dwarf was an important motif in Muñoz’s work; he was interested in the emotional and physical distance created by the scale of the figure. He also referred to its historical associations. ‘The dwarf was the only person that could criticise the court’ he explained. ‘Because of his physical distortion he was allowed to distort or exaggerate reality’.
