Exh: Ben Nicholson, Tate Gallery, June–July 1969 (87) as ‘Oct 1955 (concourse of trees)’
Repr: H. Read (introd.), Ben Nicholson work since 1947, 1956 (108); John Russell (introd.), Ben Nicholson drawings paintings and reliefs 1911–1968 (85). [Both these reproductions are titled ‘October 1955 (Concourse of trees, Tuscany)’]
Ben Nicholson has explained (letter, 26 January 1978) that for the wording of the part of this work's title which is within brackets either ‘concourse of trees’ or ‘concourse of trees, Tuscany’ may be used, but that ‘concourse of trees, Italy’ is incorrect.
It is not known whether this drawing passed directly from Barbara Hepworth (who is cited as the owner in the monograph on Nicholson published in 1956) to Miss Hodgkins (who owned it by 1969 when she lent it to the Tate exhibition).
The present work shows at least seven tree trunks: a drawing by Nicholson titled ‘October 1955 (5 trees, Tuscany)’, and of virtually the same dimensions as T02223, was exhibited in his one-man exhibition at Gimpel Fils in June 1957.
