Tools appear to be in the process of carving out their normal function and the work has become the description of an event. By painting the steel to look like the objects represented, the work reflected Opie's view that sheet metal could be regarded as a canvas and that this work falls somewhere between painting and sculpture. He has said of the work, 'it is a self-conscious sculpture. It's aware of itself being made and that makes it into a very different thing.' He has also referred to this work as a reaction to sculpture of the 1970s 'a lot of which tried to iron out any sign of human interference.'
