Parallel Stress records a performance in which Oppenheim hung suspended for ten minutes from a broken concrete casting on a pier between the Brooklyn and Manhattan bridges in New York. He then balanced his body in a similar position in an abandoned pit for one hour. Oppenheim''s early work had focussed on large-scale interventions in the landscape. Parallel Stress reflects a shift in his concerns to the body and its relationship to the spaces and materials of the industrial environment.
