This is the last of three paintings by William Orchardson on the subject of an unhappy marriage. The empty space of the parquet floor emphasises the psychological tension between the couple. It suggests that this dispute might lead to more serious problems. When it was first exhibited these lines from a Tennyson poem were published in the catalogue: It is the little rift within the lute That by-and-by will make the music mute
