As a boy in Edinburgh Paolozzi collected cigarette cards, comics and 'vulgar novelettes', and stuck images from them into scrapbooks. Inspired by his collections, he decided to become a commercial artist. At the Slade School of Art from 1944-47, he continued to fill scrapbooks with cuttings from comics, film magazines and advertisements. Paolozzi lived in Paris from 1947-50 where he also collected magazines, many of which were given to him by American ex-servicemen. A large selection of his scrapbook pages were shown without comment at a presentation of popular culture that Paolozzi gave at the ICA in London in 1952. These collages are some of the material that was presented at that historic and seminal event.
