This series of images was taken inside a public lavatory on board a train during the one-hour journey from London to Brighton. Pippin locked himself into the toilet and converted the bowl into a camera using specially designed inserts and using his trousers as an improvised dark-room in which to unload the light-sensitive photographic paper. Once the paper had been exposed the toilet was flushed and developer simultaneously injected into the cistern pipe at the rear of the bowl. The resulting images are difficult to read, enmeshed as they are in a vortex of liquid splashes and chemical spots. A video, made by the artist, documents the journey and his secret activities.
