John Singer Sargent, Oxen, Carrara 1911-13
Catalogue entry
N03560 OXEN: CARRARA 1911–13
Inscr. ‘John S. Sargent’ b.l. and ‘Carrara’ b.r.
Watercolour, 15 3/4×20 3/4 (40×53).
Presented by Lord Duveen 1920.
The artist had painted oxen in 1907, 1910 and 1911, but this watercolour is most likely to be contemporaneous with three paintings of ‘Marble Quarries at Carrara’ which Charteris dates to 1913 (1927, p.292). Mount, however, points out (1957, p.360) that the signed and dated ‘Marble Quarries at Carrara’, formerly in the Langton Douglas collection, is misdated 1913, and he includes two works of this subject under the year 1911.
