According to the artist's sister, both 'Abstract Multicoloured Design' and 'Monochrome Abstract Design' were probably made when Saunders was helping Wyndham Lewis to produce decorations for the Restaurant de la Tour Eiffel in 1915. Saunders came from a highly respectable middle-class background in which genteel women did not work, let alone become artists. She was one of two women Vorticists, the other being Jessica Dismorr. Both had joined Lewis at the Rebel Art Centre, where they experienced a degree of resistance to the idea of female members. This caused Lewis some embarrassment as the Centre was actually resourced by the painter Kate Lechmere.
