This painting is believed to be based on an incident in which Beardsley was seen walking through Hampstead Church graveyard after the unveiling of a memorial to Keats. At this time Beardsley was suffering from tuberculosis, the same disease which had killed the Romantic poet. The elegantly dressed, yet emaciated figure, set against a subdued background, adds to the poignancy of the image; Beardsley died four years later. The painting was published in the Yellow Book when Beardsley was art editor.
