Technique and condition
The artist has stretched a piece of commercially prepared linen canvas as the support for this painting. The white ground has been covered by thinly applied oil paint that must have been of a thin consistency when applied as little evidence of brush marking remains in many areas. Paint containing more white is often more thickly applied and crisply textured. Although the composition appears carefully designed, no under drawing is apparent. A glossy overall varnish has been applied.
The painting was fitted into a display frame that was too large for it. Wooden battens have been screwed to the sides of the stretcher and coloured. Along the bottom of the painting a couple of pages from 'The Sporting Life' had been rolled up and used to hold the painting in position. The date on them, Saturday, November 22nd 2001 shows the painting was framed after this date.
