Display caption
In this preliminary sketch for his painting of the Canterbury Pilgrims, Stothard is experimenting with the procession of figures in a frieze-like composition. He has also hand-written a key to the characters. There are also studies for the Squire, Knight, Yeoman, Monk and Friar.
