Trockel juxtaposes white and black, in a reference to the Russian artist Malevich, as well as smooth and textured surfaces. The white areas are derived from mountainous sections of a geological map of Europe which Trockel photographed. After enlarging the photographs she transferred them to the plate from which a rectangle had been cut. The plate was deeply bitten. The resulting embossed effect is an equivalent for its source, the topological map. The black areas are worked from photographs of meteorological phenomena in which air and water are temporarily transformed into matter. Trockel is interested in notions of transformation embodied, for example, in alchemy. The title refers to 'Alice in Wonderland'.
