Catalogue entry

Inverted relative to the sketchbook’s foliation, by comparison with more developed compositions in this book the lightly articulated washes here seem to indicate the form of a naked woman reclining in a curtained bed.
For a discussion of the improvisatory and often erotic nature of the watercolour studies making up most of this sketchbook, see the Introduction.
Technical notes:
The unaccessioned, blank recto is numbered in red ink ‘33’ and stamped ‘CCXCI(c) – 33’; it bears slight watercolour offsetting from folio 32 verso (D28926). There is some offsetting from the present page at the gutter and the middle of the unaccessioned recto of folio 34 opposite (its verso being D28930).
