This is perhaps an idea for the fallen tree in the right foreground of The Goddess of Discord Choosing the Apple of Contention in the Garden of the Hesperides exhibited at the British Institution in 1806 (Tate N00477);1 see especially folio 1 verso of the sketchbook (D05767). The motif is incorporated in the outline of the whole composition on folio 28 verso (D05813) and is explored again, with added black chalk, on folio 3 (D05770).
