This is a more careful study of the pose of the principal figure in the previous sketch in the sketchbook, folio 48 recto (D09124). The figures suggested the theme of the watercolour of Woodcock Shooting on the Chevin (Wallace Collection, London)1 based on folio 47 recto (D09123), although the pose is completely reworked in the watercolour. See notes to D09124 for the tradition that the figure in the watercolour represents its purchaser, Sir ‘Henry’ (actually William) Pilkington of Chevet Hall, Wakefield.
Wilton 1979, p.361 no. 534, as ‘Woodcock shooting on the Chiver’.
