This in one of seven oil sketches originally on one long roll of canvas. Turner is usually thought to have painted them in Rome in 1828 but he may have worked on them earlier. Turner attached the canvas to a temporary support, such as a wooden board, while working, leaving tack holes around the edges. These sketches set out classical compositions in the manner of Claude Lorrain. This design was used for his finished picture The Parting of Hero and Leander which is also in this room.
