Catalogue entry

One of several calm river scenes in this sketchbook, probably all based on the River Thames; in this example, the domes of the Royal Hospital at Greenwich can be made out on the right. The location notwithstanding, there might still be some general compositional relationship to Dort, or Dordrecht, the Dort Packet-Boat from Rotterdam Becalmed (Yale Center for British Art, New Haven, Connecticut)1 which Turner based on his trip to Holland in 1817 and mentions on folio 35 verso (D10646) in a list of works. See also notes to folio 4 (D10592).
