This view of Barnard Castle, made from a bridge across the River Tees to the north of the castle, is similar to a sketch that Turner made on the same occasion in the Rokeby and Appleby sketchbook (Tate D25628; Turner Bequest CCLXIV 55a), and recalls an earlier sketch of the castle which he made on his visit over thirty years before in 1797 (Tate D00935; Tate Britain XXXIV 29).
For more information and references to further views of the castle see folio 32 (D25823) in the present sketch book.
