Catalogue entry

Turner turned the sketchbook round to landscape format to make this sketch. It is one of three in the sketchbook showing boats or boatmen (see also folios 9 and 10, D04806, D04807). David Hill suggests that this sketch was made on the Urnersee, the eastern end of Lake Lucerne, and the others were presumably made at the same time; folio 10 has a more finished, coloured study of a boatman similar to a figure seen here. The Royal Academy exhibition catalogue of 1974 had earlier speculated that the location was Thun.
