Samuel Berry’s castellated Gothic mansion on the site of the original Buckfast Abbey is seen at the centre, with Dartmoor rising to the west above the valley of the Holy Brook. The twentieth-century abbey church was later built to the right of the house as seen here; for more details of the site and Turner’s other drawings of it, see under folio 23 recto (D09855; Turner Bequest CXXXIV 57).
