211a. [D08272] English Landscape c. 1810

THE BRITISH MUSEUM, LONDON (CXXI-P)

Oil on paper, irregular, 7 9/16 × 10 1/2 (19·2 × 26·7)

Inscr. ‘9’ on reverse

Coll. Turner Bequest 1856.

Lit. Finberg 1909, i, p. 335.

As Finberg points out, this finished oil sketch is close in style to the Lowther Castle landscapes, exhibited in 1810, Nos. 111 and 112. The general disposition of the landscape is similar, though no castle is shown, as are the rather wispy trees on the right and the foreground detail. It is more finished than the Devonshire sketches of 1813 and the tonality is darker. Finberg dates it c. 1809; the dating given here is slightly less precise in implication.
