Catalogue entry

Here Turner records three rough views of the mighty limestone rocks which line the Meuse near the village of Samson, Belgium (see also Tate D20058; Turner Bequest CCXVI 259). At top left there is a swiftly rendered jotting of the quayside in the city of Liège. Boatmen have moored their vessels at a station on the quay ready to disembark with their wares or to load up their boats with goods for a new journey.
