This watercolour depicts the town of Angera, situated on the eastern shore of Lake Maggiore in northern Italy. It is one of many works made in collaboration by Thomas Girtin and JMW Turner in the London home of Dr Thomas Monro during the 1790s. Monro ran an evening academy, or ‘Manufactory’, for young artists, who were paid to copy studies by established figures such as John Robert Cozens, who probably made the original drawing this picture is based on. Generally, as in this instance, Girtin drew in the outlines of the composition while Turner supplied the washes and colour.
