This is one of a number of drawings in the Turner Bequest made jointly by the young Turner and his contemporary, Thomas Girtin. They were employed by Dr Thomas Monro to copy works by famous artists from his own collection. Girtin did the underdrawing, and Turner completed the washes.
Monro was an enthusiastic collector of works by old masters and contemporary watercolourists, and was himself an amateur artist. He was also an eminent physician of mental illness. His patients included King George III, the painter
John Robert Cozens, and Turner's mother.
