Turner visited the archaeological site at Herculaneum and made a sequence of sketches of the theatre, accessible through a sequence of underground tunnels. This study depicts a view within one of the passageways near the proscenium (stage). For a fuller description of the theatre see folio 86 (D15896; Turner Bequest CLXXXV 84).
