Catalogue entry

If Turner’s inscription has been interpreted correctly, the scene may be Maudlin, in the hilly, undulating country north-west of Lostwithiel and not far from Restormel Castle (see under folio 7 recto; D08374). Modern maps indicate various disused quarries, and Turner appears to indicate some industrial activity in the foreground. The lack of prominent landmarks makes the viewpoint difficult to establish.
