Turner passed through the Umbrian city of Perugia as part of his route north to Florence from Rome. This sketch of the main square, Piazza IV Novembre, has been drawn extremely swiftly, probably from a moving carriage, so that the depiction of the topography is slightly confused and schematic. Visible at the centre of the composition, however, is the round medieval fountain, the Fontana Maggiore, with the cathedral beyond.
