Catalogue entry

Across the lower half of this page is drawn part of Calton Gaol on the lower reaches slope of Calton Hill, a similar sketch of which was made in the Bass Rock and Edinburgh sketchbook (Tate D13432; Turner Bequest CLXV 60a). Turner made numerous sketches of Calton Hill, a major Edinburgh landmark, and of views of the city from this vantage point. At the top of the page is a small sketch of a multi-arched bridge in a hilly landscape with a largely illegible inscription describing the ‘B[ridge]’ with ‘3 lines’ and 2 ‘d[...]’.
