Catalogue entry

The central focus of this swiftly wrought colour sketch is the fishing coble, rendered in a warm ochre wash. Turner depicts its curving bow and trapezoid lugsail in a few deft strokes. In shape and colour, it resembles the coble in the finished Ports watercolours Whitby and Dover (Tate D18143, D18154; Turner Bequest CCVIII J, U). Short downward dry brush-strokes of blue and ochre wash adroitly represent specks of cloud.
