Catalogue entry

With the page turned vertically, Turner has made two rapid studies of shipping under sail, one above the other. The top one also indicates the arches of Old London Bridge on the left, seen to the west up the River Thames from the Pool of London, with the dome of St Paul’s Cathedral in the distance near the centre. More than half the drawings in this sketchbook show the river around the bridge, and are likely to date from 1824; see the Introduction.
