This sheet illustrates Turner’s concern with staffage as an essential element in the foreground of a topographical view. The figures were possibly copied from a print; compare William Henry Pyne’s Microcosm, though these examples are not from that work. The quality of the drawing can be compared with that of sheets like Tate D00398 (Turner Bequest XXIII X).
