The view is to the west up Totnes’s Fore Street to the tower of St Mary’s Church and the castle beyond, from the south of the east end of the medieval bridge (since replaced) over the River Dart. There have been various changes to the riverside buildings but the scene is still recognisable from the bridge.
For other views of Totnes in this sketchbook and elsewhere, see under folio 94 verso (D08542; CXXIII 91a).
There are two ink blots offset from the inscription on folio 138 verso opposite (D08624; CXXIII 135a).
