Catalogue entry

Here Turner has rendered two views of the ruins of Kirkstall Abbey, situated on the River Aire near Leeds, West Yorkshire (see Tate D18390; Turner Bequest CCX 48). The sketch at top left appears to show the Leeds to Liverpool Canal and Kirkstall Lock (see Tate D18414–D18416; Turner Bequest CCX 61–62).
These sketches are associated with Turner’s watercolours of Kirkstall Abbey and Kirkstall Lock, on the River Aire produced for W.B. Cooke’s Rivers of England series (Tate D18146; Turner Bequest CCVIII L, M and Tate impressions T04811, T04816).1
