Catalogue entry

With the page turned vertically, these rather hurried, perfunctory sketches appear to represent different aspects of the same building, described by Finberg only as ‘Ruins’;1 the subject may be the Tudor fortifications of Walmer Castle, on the Kent coast near Deal (see under folio 4 recto; D35763). Compare the detailed views in the 1825 Holland sketchbook (Tate D19394–D19396; Turner Bequest CCXIV 279a, 280, 280a).
