See notes to D04645; Turner Bequest LXXV 53 from this sketchbook, a view of the same place described by Finberg as near Chamonix but identifiable as Wassen. In this instance this is confirmed by Turner’s label, numbered ‘13’ as is the drawing and reading ‘St Gothard’ and ‘Wasen’. For Turner’s visit to the St Gotthard Pass and Reuss gorge in 1802 see Introduction to the sketchbook and notes to D04628; Turner Bequest LXXV 36.
