Catalogue entry

Although on a slightly larger sheet of different paper, this is probably, like Tate D00894 (Turner Bequest XXXIII W), an unfinished design intended for the Copper-Plate Magazine, on which Turner worked for the engraver-publisher John Walker from 1794; see the introductory note to the Matlock sketchbook (Tate; Turner Bequest XIX). He may have decided that he wished to develop the second subject, rather than this one, into a finished view to be engraved.
Verso:
Blank; some paint splashes.
