This is one of a number of smaller works, fixed to the wall or resting directly on the floor, that Wilding made in the mid-1980s using a range of materials such as wood, brass, lead, wax or steel. At the time, the artist was interested in testing her ideas in smaller works. On the Day, with its funnel-shaped central form, is linked to a group of similarly vessel-shaped but floor-based works. These are some of Wilding''s most obviously figurative sculptures. Their scuttle-shaped central forms have been linked to the idea of the female as generator or producer, and as protector.
