The artist wrote that ‘the painting “Seedtime” was begun in the late summer of '58 and completed early in '59. I am in the habit of painting ten to fifteen canvases at a time and working on all for a considerable period. I date them therefore, by the year in which they were completed’ (letter of 6 February 1963).
