P07499 CONSERVATORY I 1979
Both inscribed ‘Walker 79’ bottom right ‘I’ inscribed ‘Conservatory’ and ‘44/45’ ‘II’ inscribed ‘Conservatory II’ and ‘39/45’ Two screenprints, printed at Advanced Graphics and published by the artist, each approx. 57×48 1/2 (144.7×123) Purchased from Nigel Greenwood (Grant-in-Aid) 1981
Both prints [P07499 and P07500] are based on a drawing (no.8, repr. Drawings 1978, Nigel Greenwood Gallery), divided by a large tall triangular shape at the left. In ‘Conservatory II’, narrow louvred shutters frame this central image: a window, a balcony and shutters appear in a number of drawings (op.cit.) and the ‘Numinous’ paintings, all 1977–8. The tall triangle and flower and leaf shapes also appear in later drawings (see especially no.22, repr. Drawings 1981, Nigel Greenwood Gallery). A flower motif in ‘Conservatory I’ appears to be derived from a Japanese kimono pattern.
