See the introductory text to T03983-04063 for general comments on this edition, published by H.G. Bohn in 1855 under the title English Landscape Scenery: A Series of Forty Mezzotinto Engravings on Steel, by David Lucas. From Pictures Painted by John Constable, R.A.
The titles used here are those that appear on the prints themselves, except for subjects first published in the 1830-2 English Landscape
series, for which the original titles, as given on T03983-04063, have been retained. The ruled borders or framing lines (as Shirley calls them) used on the later Lucas subjects included in this edition have been ignored for the purpose of measuring the images.

Lit: Shirley 1930, no.49, only published state; Hill 1985, no.31
Lucas based this plate on the large painting which Constable was working on at the time of his death and which was exhibited posthumously in 1837 (Toledo Museum of Art, Toledo, Ohio; Reynolds 1984, no.37.1, pl.1086 in col.; Hill 1985, pl.31 in col.). As Reynolds points out, the birds flying above the castle are not visible in the painting and Lucas may have taken this detail from a pencil drawing now in the Victoria and Albert Museum (Reynolds 1984, no.35.11, pl.997).
As with the 'Mill near Colchester' (T04097), Shirley records no impression with Lucas's publication line, despite the fact that the print was listed in the contents of his 1846 New Series. Leslie touched a proof on 15 January 1846 and a later proof is dated 2 February (Shirley 1930, p.214, progress proofs 'k' and 'p').
