Artist biography

Bernard ADENEY b. 1878

Painter and textile designer. Born 2 August 1878 in London, son of Canon W.F. Adeney. Studied at the R.A. Schools 1892–7; Académie Julian, Paris, 1897; Slade School 1912. Married Noël Gilford, painter and writer. Exhibited at the R.A. 1900; Second Post-Impressionist Exhibition 1912. Founder member of the London Group 1913, and President 1921–3. Founder member of the London Artists' Association 1925. Taught at the Central School from 1903 where he was Head of the Textile School 1930–47. Held joint exhibition with Keith Baynes at the Independent Gallery 1922.
