Charles L. HARTWELL 1873–1951
Sculptor of figures and portrait busts. Born 1 August 1873 in Blackheath, Surrey. Studied at the City and Guilds School, Kennington, under S. W. Frith and from 1896 at the R.A. Schools; then privately under Onslow Ford and Hamo Thorny-croft. Exhibited at the R.A. from 1900; A.R.A. 1915, R.A. 1924. Produced a number of war memorials and other monuments. Awarded the R.B.S. Silver Medal for ‘The Goatherd's Daughter’ in 1929. Died in Aldwick, Sussex, 12 January 1951.
