Francesco Sleter 1685–1775

Artist biography


Decorative and history painter, said to be a Venetian by birth. Nothing is known of his early training or career, but his style is close to Amiconi and Sebastiano Ricci. First recorded in England in 1719, executing decorative work for the Duke of Chandos at Canons. Also worked at Moor Park, Stowe and Moulsham Hall, and lastly for the Earl of Westmorland at Mereworth Castle, Kent. He died there 29 August 1775, aged ninety, and was buried in Mereworth churchyard.
