Gilbert BAYES 1872–1953
Sculptor in bronze, and architectural and monumental designer. Born 4 April 1872 in London, son of A. W. Bayes, painter and etcher, and brother of Walter Bayes. Studied at the City and Guilds Technical College, and then the R.A. Schools 1896–9. Honourable Mention at the Paris International Exhibition 1900; Gold Medal and Diploma of Honour at the Paris Exhibition of Decorative Art 1925. Honorary Member of the R.I. 1918; President of the R.B.S. 1939–44. Executed the frieze of the Saville Theatre, for which he was awarded the R.B.S. Silver Medal 1931. Died 10 July 1953 in London.
