Gillian WISE b. 1936
Constructivist artist. Born 16 February 1936 at Ilford, Essex. Studied at Wimbledon School of Art 1954–7. Became interested in the writings of the American ‘Concretionist’ artist Charles Biederman, with whom she corresponded and who put her in touch with Anthony Hill and the constructive group in England. First exhibited with the Young Contemporaries 1957; made a large construction for the International Union of Architects Congress, South Bank 1961; exhibited in Constructivisme at the Galerie Dautzenberg, Paris, 1962 and in Collage and Construction at the Aldeburgh Festival 1962. First exhibition with Anthony Hill at the I.C.A. 1963.
