Artist biography

Robert AUSTIN b. 1895

Draughtsman and engraver. Born 23 June 1895 in Leicester. Studied at Leicester School of Art and at the R.C.A. 1914 to April 1916 and 1919–22, winning the Rome Scholarship for engraving 1922. Served in the Artillery 1916–19. Elected A.R.E. 1921 and R.E. 1927; R.W.S. 1930; A.R.A. 1939. Tutor of Engraving at the R.C.A. 1927–44 and Professor in the Department of Graphic Design 1948–55.
