Violet, Duchess of RUTLAND 1856–1937
Sculptor and portrait painter in watercolour. Born 7 March 1856 at Haigh Hall, Wigan, Lancashire, daughter of Colonel the Honourable Charles Hugh Lindsay, C.B. Married the 8th Duke of Rutland 1882. Influenced by Burne-Jones and encouraged by Alfred Gilbert. Exhibited at the Grosvenor Gallery 1900, New Gallery from 1904, R.A. 1925–31. First one-man exhibition at the Fine Art Society 1919. Published Portraits of Men and Women 1900. Died in London 22 December 1937.
